Back to Greenway
Rocky Dell/Reynal Park Neighborhood Association
UPDATE March 12, 2006
City Sale of Neighborhood Open Space for 11 Houses
Dear Rocky Dell/Reynal Park Neighbor:
There was a big turnout last week for the neighborhood association meeting to discuss the sale by the city of the woods abutting the Greenway Park on Ridgeway and Railside Avenue. The plan to sell this open space and develop it with new houses will forever change the landscape of our community.
HERE IS WHAT WE ARE DOING
1. The Mayor and Common Council have been sent a letter from the association objecting to the sale (see opposite side of page)
2. We have sent information on our position to local media.
3. Groups of volunteers went out this past weekend to gather petition signatures and pass out information - THE RESPONSE WAS TERRIFIC! That effort continues.
4. Neighbors have been sending letters to the newspaper as well as contacting the Mayor and Councilmen Bernstein, Boykin, Hockley and Greer who voted to sell the open space.
NEXT STEPS - HOW YOU CAN HELP
1. Sign the petitions.
2. Write and/or email letters to the Mayor, Councilmen Bernstein, Boykin, Hockley and Greer - Time is of the Essence - DO NOT WAIT as bids are due back to the city on March 28.
3. Volunteer to help bring around petitions; get signatures from friends, neighbors and co-workers.
4. Send your own letter to the Journal News, White Plains Times, CititzenNetReporter.
5. Come to a "walk & talk" about the site and the Greenway lead by Jack Harrington on Saturday, March 25 at 10 AM (refreshments will be served - meet at the Railside Avenue woods).
6. ATTEND THE NEXT NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION MEETING ON MONDAY MARCH 27, 7PM AT RIDGEWAY SCHOOL
7. PLAN ON ATTENDING THE NEXT COMMON COUNCIL MEETING ON MONDAY, APRIL 3AT 7 PM
I would like to thank all of you who have attended meetings, wrote letters and worked on getting signatures. Our work is not done. Use the power of your voice and let yourself be heard. For petitions or information call me at 946-7115 or stop by my house at 9Amy Place after 6:00 PM or before 8:00 AM.

Rocky Dell/Reynal Park Neighborhood Association
March 12, 2006
Hon. Joseph Delfino and Members of the Common Council
City of White Plains
255 Main Street
White Plains, NY 10601
Dear Mayor Delfino & Common Council Members:
I am writing to you in my capacity as Vice President of the Rocky Dell/Reynal Park Neighborhood Association. The Neighborhood Association was surprised and dismayed to read in the local newspaper that the majority of you voted to support the sale of city owned open space. in our neighborhood in exchange for the development of up to 11 new houses. Nine of the new lots that would be carved out of the woodland are located next to the (Ireenway park.
The Neighborhood Association opposes the sale of this open space for the following reasons.
1. Our neighborhood is a densely developed one that needs more open space not less.
2. Our neighborhood association has been on record for many years requesting that the city officially dedicate this open space as parkland.
3. This property is one of the only areas along the Greenway that is in a natural state and not developed.
4. The wooded and natural character of this open space has important visual and aesthetic appeal.
5. The one time sale of scarce open space to fund operating budget shortfalls for things such as office supplies and salaries is not a fiscally sound one.
6. Other communities in Westchester are spending money to buy more open space and finding, ways to protect existing neighborhoods from development not selling neighborhood open space they already own.
7. This section of Ridgeway has experienced increases in traffic and been the location of several accidents. Additional traffic from the 11 new homes will make a bad situation worse.
The city often asks builders to meet with neighborhood associations to explain their development plans before the council will approve them. Why doesn't the same standard apply to the city when it is selling land for development? Why didn't you contact our neighborhood before you voted to sell the woods and get our input?
We are disappointed in your stand on selling open space and hope that you will vote to keep this land open and finally dedicate it as parkland as we have long requested.
Very truly yours,
Anthony Soliinjn , Vice president
